While AV Search Consultants is clear about its role as a legal search firm and not a placement agency, we maintain extensive relationships with law firms and corporations that can occasionally result in “matchmaking.”

A young commercial litigator with stellar credentials and some labor and employment experience came to us because he wanted to specialize in labor and employment law—an area of law in which his firm did not specialize.  A labor and employment boutique had previously given us the mandate to immediately call them if we identified such a candidate.  The result:  he was interviewed and hired on the spot.  He ultimately became a partner and the head of the firm’s employment litigation practice.

A General Counsel candidate from a multi-national manufacturing corporation contacted us just as we were opening a search for a company seeking his exact qualifications—including experience working with a European-headquartered company.  We interviewed him and submitted him with the first group of candidates; and in less than sixty days he had relocated from the midwest to the southeast and taken over as our client’s first General Counsel.

A young attorney with a Swedish background contacted us.  As one of our recruiters spoke with him, she recognized that his unique knowledge of the Swedish language and culture might make him of interest to one of our clients:  a Swedish headquartered company with a U.S. office with which we had done some significant work.  The result:  the attorney was hired and is now part of the General Counsel’s team in Sweden, in line to be ultimately considered for the G.C.’s position.

We are frequently contacted by attorneys who are practicing in large law firms in New York and are seeking to relocate to New Jersey.  Our comprehensive knowledge of this market—including compensation differences, practice sophistication, geographic considerations which impact commuting, and long-term career potential—makes us uniquely suited to assist these individuals.  One of our recruiters got on-the-spot offers for the first three associates that interviewed with one of our clients.

We maintain a sophisticated database of the individuals with whom we have had contact.  If we don’t have what you are looking for today, we may have it tomorrow.  A call to our office is always worthwhile.

Tips for job seekers in a tough economy:

People get jobs through people they know. Renew old acquaintances, make new connections and stay in contact with your legal recruiter.

A chance encounter can turn into a potential job lead. Don’t allow your preconceptions to close your mind to an opportunity.

Give up the mind-set that only large law firms have truly challenging work. In the current economy, the mid-sized firms with more flexible rates are the ones that are continuing to grow and they’re competing with the big firms for the best matters.

Think of yourself in terms of “value added.” Do your homework on the firm in which you’re interested and be prepared to discuss what you bring to the table, both in terms of skills and potential client relationships.
